In Kakuma refugee Camp and host communities, adolescent girls and young mothers face significant barriers to education, leadership, and personal development. Stigma, limited support systems, and social norms often prevent them from returning to school or pursuing opportunities that can improve their futures. As a result, many young women struggle to access mentorship, confidence-building opportunities, and safe spaces where they can share their experiences and aspirations.

To address these challenges, youth participating in the Gender Transformative Education (GTE) initiative under the JRS EAGLE-K Project took action to support their peers. Through the Gender Responsive Education (GRE) Youth Club, girls and boys were equipped with leadership skills, confidence, communication abilities, and a deeper understanding of gender equality and social inclusion. Beyond the training sessions, participants actively engaged their peers and communities through dialogue forums and radio talk shows, creating awareness about issues affecting youth, particularly girls’ education and empowerment.

As the initiative grew, seven committed youths, four girls and three boys, identified the need for a dedicated support network for vulnerable girls and young mothers. Inspired by the lessons and leadership skills acquired through the youth club, they established Mothers in Learning and Empowerment Support (MILES), guided by the powerful slogan: “Together We Can Change HER STORY.”

Since its formation, MILES has become a safe and supportive space where girls and young mothers receive mentorship, encouragement, and practical support to continue learning and rebuilding their futures with dignity and hope. The group has grown to 15 active members, including 12 girls and 3 boys, creating a strong peer network that promotes education, resilience, and self-confidence. Notably, the boys involved have embraced their role as allies and advocates, helping challenge harmful gender norms and supporting girls to achieve their full potential.

Nyajuok William Deng’s story reflects the transformative impact of youth empowerment and leadership development. Before joining the GRE Youth Club, Nyajuok was like many young girls in her community, full of potential but uncertain about her ability to lead and influence change.

Through the youth club sessions, she gained confidence, leadership skills, and a stronger belief in her abilities. The program encouraged her to find her voice, participate in discussions, and take on leadership responsibilities within her school and community.

Nyajuok’s leadership journey began during her school years, where she served as the school president, a role she credits to the leadership and life skills she gained through the youth club. After completing Form Four, she witnessed her cousin become pregnant, an experience that opened her eyes to the challenges faced by many girls and young mothers in her community. Seeing a clear need for support, guidance, and mentorship, Nyajuok helped found MILES. Through MILES, she has worked to create a safe and supportive space for girls and young mothers, empowering them to overcome challenges and pursue brighter futures.

Through MILES, Nyajuok mentors’ peers, advocates for girls’ education, and helps create pathways for young mothers and vulnerable girls to continue learning and pursue their goals. Her journey demonstrates how investing in young people’s leadership can create lasting change that extends far beyond individual success.

“The youth club helped me believe in myself and discover my leadership potential. Through MILES, we are supporting girls and young mothers to continue their education and build a better future. Together, we can change her story.” – Nyajuok William Deng

With confidence, leadership, and a commitment to community service, Nyajuok and her fellow MILES founders are creating opportunities for vulnerable girls and young mothers to learn, grow, and thrive. Their work is a powerful example of how youth-led initiatives can drive positive social change and build stronger, more inclusive communities.
