JRS first project in East Africa was in Ethiopia. We serve mainly refugees coming from Eritrea, but also South Sudan and Somalia. We have supported refugees with Education, Protection, Livelihoods, Reconciliation, Psychosocial support and Emergency relief in all three locations!

In 2024 we served:
2,218 people with Education. 328 people with Livelihoods. 4,956 people with Psychosocial support. 705 people with Reconciliation. 564 people with Protection. 5,802 people with Emergency relief.

A TOTAL OF: 13,853 beneficiaries.

JRS was a key role during the opening of Kakuma Refugee Camp in 1992. Since the 80s we were present in Nairobi. Since then, we’ve accompanied refugees from Somalia, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Rwanda… with Education, Livelihoods, Protection, Psychosocial Support and Emergency Relief programs.

In 2024 we served:
742 people with Education. 159 people with Livelihoods. 1,205 people with Psychosocial support. 79 people with Protection. 1,492 people with Emergency relief.

A TOTAL OF: 3,677 beneficiaries.

Uganda is one of the biggest refugee host countries in the world due to its welcoming policy for refugees. We played a key role establishing the first and only schools in Adjumani when one of the biggest flows South Sudanese arrived for the first or second time to the region. “Without JRS and Father Frido, there would be no education in Adjumani”, said the Principle of one of the schools.

In 2024 we served:
13,158 people with Education. 499 people with Livelihoods. 1,173 people with Psychosocial support. 123 people with Reconciliation. 7,290 people with Advocacy. 2,476 people with Pastoral. 11,137 people with Health and Medical support. 12, 588 people with Emergency relief.

A TOTAL OF: 48,444 beneficiaries.

With the 10 years-old independence of South Sudan, the existing humanitarian crisis in the country is still being today a big concern to the community. Working mainly with IDPs in South Sudan, we are focused on Education, Psychosocial Support, Reconciliation, Protection and Pastoral.

In 2024 we served:
9,557 people with Education. 1,276 people with Psychosocial support. 753 people with Reconciliation. 5,073 people with Protection. 3,277 people with Pastoral.

A TOTAL OF: 19,936 beneficiaries.

JRS works closely with authorities, local communities, and partners in order to continue its commitment to the education, dignity and resilience of refugee and host communities.

Between 2024 and 2025, JRS served:

66,357 students (31,966 refugees, 34,391 returnees and members of host communities) who accessed quality education and received school kits including notebooks, pens, rulers, and mathematical sets;
1,686 teachers (1,164 Burundians and 522 refugees) who were supported and trained;
3,971 parents equipped with skills to manage income-generating microprojects; and
13,000 girls who received dignity kits to strengthen their well-being.

JRS also invested in 472 partner schools, creating a safe and sustainable learning environment through:
119 school infrastructures constructed or rehabilitated;
75,158 trees planted to support environmental protection and prevent soil erosion;
and 110 solidarity groups comprising 2,750 members, strengthened in social cohesion, economic autonomy, and mutual support within their communities.

A TOTAL OF: 87,764 people benefited from our services.
