JRS first project in East Africa was in Ethiopia. We serve mainly refugees coming from Eritrea, but also South Sudan and Somalia. We have supported refugees with Education, Protection, Livelihoods, Reconciliation, Psychosocial support and Emergency relief in all three locations!

JRS was a key role during the opening of Kakuma Refugee Camp in 1992. Since the 80s we were present in Nairobi. Since then, we’ve accompanied refugees from Somalia, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Rwanda…  with Education, Livelihoods, Protection, Psychosocial Support and Emergency Relief programs.

Uganda is one of the biggest refugee host countries in the world due to its welcoming policy for refugees. We played a key role establishing the first and only schools in Adjumani when one of the biggest flows South Sudanese arrived for the first or second time to the region. “Without JRS and Father Frido, there would be no education in Adjumani”, said the Principle of one of the schools.

With the 10 years-old independence of South Sudan, the existing humanitarian crisis in the country is still being today a big concern to the community. Working mainly with IDPs in South Sudan, we are focused on Education, Psychosocial Support, Reconciliation, Protection and Pastoral.
